The Property

Architect designed luxury B&B in North Devon with swimming pool.

Architect designed and built in the early 70's by a prominent local gentleman. Standing in the middle of acres of farmland and isolated from any other properties, the house was bought by its current owners a decade ago.

Having undergone total renovation to reinstate its mid century charm along with a contemporary twist, this spacious property offers a comfy, light-filled interior. Outside is a natural haven for deer, badgers, foxes and birds, whilst inside the crisp linens, down duvets, delicious breakfasts and fresh flowers enhance the welcoming, tranquil ambience.  

Inside

• Style: An eclectic fusion of contemporary, vintage and ethnic furnishings and décor.
• Bedrooms and Bathrooms: One double and a double/twin bedroom. The French bedroom is a king-size double with cherry-wood sleigh bed and a pair of modern tub chairs, offering privacy and garden views. The Nantucket bedroom - with its huge windows looking out over the gardens and valley - is a large, New England style king-size double/twin with white wood panelling, a modern dressing table, sofa and a vintage Danish chair. Both bedrooms have en suite bathrooms equipped with fluffy white towels and organic toiletries. The French bathroom has a large shower and slate floor, while the Nantucket room has a double-ended bath with marble surround.
• For relaxation: Sink into huge sofas by the wood-burning stove in the living room, enjoy tea in the sun room or kick back on the sunny patio by the pool. For writers and contemplative types there is a hut at the bottom of the garden, offering stunning views to the valley and local wildlife.
• For recreation: Take a dip in the solar-heated pool (open May to September), stroll in the large garden and woodland or relax inside with a good book by the fire.
• Practicalities: Bedrooms are decked out with Japanese kimono gowns, fluffy towels, hair dryers, fresh flowers and a selection of the latest magazines. Tea facilities are not available in the room, but hot and cold drinks can be provided on request.

Food and Wine

• Eating out: A range of excellent eateries nearby includes the Michelin-starred Mason's Arms in Knowstone, The Stag Inn at Rackenford and The Grove Inn at Kings Nympton   
• In-house cuisine: Tuck into sumptuous breakfasts stacked with locally sourced, home-grown and organic produce. A delicious platter includes: home made granola, fresh fruit (from the garden when in season), freshly laid eggs (from the owners' hens), locally sourced bacon and sausages, home made marmalade, jams and compotes. (Vegetarian and special diets catered for.) Home-baked cakes are served with tea on arrival and during the afternoon. Evening meals are not provided.

Outside

Swim in a solar-heated pool (May to Sept) and roam 11 acres of woodland and organic gardens including a cutting garden, fruit trees, a spring garden and a vegetable patch. Much of the land boasts a wild and informal beauty and makes a natural habitat for birds, deer, badgers and foxes. Please note that guests swim in the pool and explore the woods at their own risk and with prior permission from the owners.

• On the map: The Garden House is just off the B3137, about 5 miles south of South Molton in the parish of Romansleigh, North Devon
• By car: About 4 hours from London (200 miles)
• By train: The nearest train station is Tiverton Parkway, about 25 miles away. However, due to the lack of public transport links to the property, it is not recommended that you stay here without your own transport.
• By air: Exeter airport 43 miles, Bristol airport 75 miles

About Your Hosts

Both avid travellers, Rosie and David downshifted to the West Country 10 years ago. Previously a fashion designer, Rosie retrained as a florist and then became a wedding planner. She now runs the house and a website all about green weddings. David, once an industrial designer who worked in the city, is now a furniture designer-maker who creates unique pieces of furniture using sustainable timber.

Out and About

• Visit the market town of South Molton (just 15 minutes away), or browse the shops in Barnstaple (30 minutes away)
• Enjoy a profusion of colour and scent at the RHS Rosemoor Gardens (40 minutes' drive)
• Head to Exmoor or Dartmoor for walking, horse riding, kayaking and climbing
• Beach lovers can stroll the pearly sands and surf the waves on the wild north coast beaches of Croyde and Woolacombe (about 40 minutes' drive)
• Other local attractions include fishing, cycling the Tarka Trail, sightseeing at Dunster Castle and day trips to Lundy Island
